Cash App: Steps to Take if You Sent Money to the Wrong Person
Cash App doesn’t allow you to reverse payments once they are sent, as transactions occur instantly. If you've mistakenly sent money to the wrong recipient, your best option is to request a refund directly from them. Here’s how to do that within 30 days of the payment:
- Open the Cash App and tap the Activity tab.
- Locate the payment in question.
- Tap Completed.
- Select Report an Issue and choose the reason for your request.
- Tap Next to submit your refund request.
If the recipient is willing, they may return the funds, but Cash App cannot enforce refunds for mistaken payments.
Zelle: What to Do If You Sent Money to the Wrong Person
Zelle allows you to cancel payments only if the recipient hasn’t enrolled yet. Once they’re registered, payments are instant, and your only recourse is to request a refund. Here’s how to cancel a payment if the recipient isn't enrolled:
- Log in to your bank account or the Zelle app.
- Find the payment and select Cancel This Payment.
If cancellation isn’t an option, contact the recipient to request a refund. Some banks, like U.S. Bank, may allow you to dispute completed Zelle payments, or you can reach out to your bank’s fraud department if you suspect fraud.
Venmo: Steps to Take if You Sent Money to the Wrong Person
Venmo offers different solutions based on the payment status. If a payment is pending, you can easily cancel it. However, if it’s already completed, your options are limited. Here’s what to do:
For pending payments:
- Go to the Me tab in the Venmo app.
- Locate the transaction.
- Tap Take Back to cancel the payment.
If you’ve sent money to friends or family, you can send a charge request for the same amount with an explanation. For payments to strangers, contact Venmo’s support team to see if they can assist in recovering the funds.
